This moment is brilliant:

“Since then I’ve been on a new spiritual path.” She fingered her vulva amulet. “Exploring new territory within myself.”
I held up my empty McDonald’s cup. “I have to find a place for this,” I said.

Great story. Thank you.

Good, good story. I was so pulled into it (guess shouldn't read online fiction at work) that when someone asked me a question, for a moment I could not recall where I was.

Love the last line of that story! Funny though, only from reading the feedback from Judith Goran did I make the connection with the title. But I don't think it matters that some readers won't make that connection either. It was a good sweet, but not overly sentimental story, and really showed how perspective can chamge everything. I'm reminded of Paul Harvey---And now you know the rest of the story...

George,
Finally it's a hot 50 degree July day, just right for sitting down at last with your story. And I'm sure glad I did. The temperature is now nearing 100 thanks to you. Yep, you did it again, created a world and sent a kind-hearted laugh and a good-hearted sigh through your terrific story. The only thing missing was a toss from you of a hunk of chocolate! Thanks so much!

Thanks for sharing that story, George, I can only guess at the terrible disappointment Ed felt when he was reminded that his mother chose Witski and "her little boy' casting out her true son--and worse, that she still remembers him now, calling him 'Poor little Richard."

We are often not only not-heroes to our parents, but also judged more harshly aginst the lives of other children around us.

If you want to read a worthy one of mine, check out the "Afterburn SF" magazine site in July, and look for a story called "Burning Bright." No, it it not about William Blake; more about the 'tyger' of his poem. It's theme is loss of one's ability to lead the life one chooses, and how it affects the central character, whose role defines him.

I LOVED your story. Good to see who you are after receiving so many invitations to writers events from you. I'm old enough to remember all the words to Mares Eat Oats (Mairzy Doates) and I think your story fulfilled all the intentions of the questions the teacher osed at the end.

Best wishes,
Judith Goren

Fabulous story! The ending is just right--restrained and clear. The "little song" comes to hold all the irony one could wish for. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the workshop characters, funny but not mocking. We recognize them all. I can see why the editors selected this story. Thanks for writing this.
