Absolutely wonderful! I enjoyed the depth with which you developed the characters and shared their experiences.

This piece, with its treasure trove of details, is a pleasure to read aloud. Everything from cakes to tools to a walk through a springtime neighborhood to the slow-motion shuffle of a TB ward is rendered with such immediacy. These scenes are so fresh they seem to describe what happened yesterday instead events from decades long gone. No dust on these people and places; they're right here. I'm looking forward to the book!

Wonderfully evokes another era through concise and rich detail of everyday objects and places. Great story of a man using his idle time to grow and enrich his mind and life through reading and his determination to heal his body. Terrific!

A wonderfully poignant piece. I could easily see Fred, the child, eyes wide listening to his father. Well done.
